"Democrats have no obligation to vote for a budget that funds a runaway, immoral agency just because Republicans are so beholden to Trump, they refuse to agree to any reforms. We shouldn’t pretend we are powerless; we aren’t."

Thank you for saying this. Please stand by it. Congress is the only body that can stand against what Trump is doing.

Bucky Buchanan's avatar

but they won't. I have no clue how they sleep at night...or vote for DHS funding.

SweetieP's avatar

The same way Trump sleeps at night. NOT. It may take a while but they will be tried for murder.

Elizabeth J. Sampson's avatar

They are playing on Putin’s side.

Scott Whitmire's avatar

House Dems who voted for the DHS funds are all in tough districts. They voted knowing the Senate wouldn’t pass the bill because they’d never get the 60 votes needed. It was a local, heat-of-the moment call. Can’t really fault their logic, even if they voted for politics and not conscience.

Thomas N's avatar

They voted like people who think they deserve a continued position in Congress rather than doing the job they were elected to do!

Mark my words's avatar

They voted like the cowards they are.

Scott Whitmire's avatar

That’s accurate.

Ashley W's avatar

Some voted that way because they wanted to. Tom Suozzi has co-sponsored several bipartisan immigration bills prior to his vote last week, and has said he is also determined to bring together a new alliance –“business, the bible, and badges”– in a collective effort to lobby Congress and force it to do its job. That language is right of the GOP playbook. Suozzi is now saying that his vote last week to fund the DHS was a mistake. What did he even gain? Nothing because now he has angered everyone.

It doesn’t matter if you are in a tough district. The 7 Democrats who opted to voted the way they did should be primaried out of their seats. It is the continued spinelessness of too many people in Congress, always for fear of losing their seat, which has gotten us into this mess.

Vida Robertson MD's avatar

You can’t fault their logic?? Who were they trying to placate? It’s all about getting reelected… they are so narcissistic that they only care about their political careers. Their whole strategy is what would help themselves and not their constituents. They couldn’t care less about them.

They will absolutely be primaried for their cowardice and lack of any conviction for doing the right thing.

Scott Whitmire's avatar

Take WA3. It’s always a close race and voting the way she did was working for the people in her district. All politics is local. In her case, the alternative was far worse.

US Blues's avatar

FEMA and TSA but the ICE madness has to stop.

SweetieP's avatar

Most ICE Detention Centers won't allow oversight. Senators are denied access to the building. Even lawyers are refused and left outside of the walls. I saw a video of an attorney who went to a detention center for children and mothers. He was denied twice to see his client(s), and could hear them all screaming "GET US OUT OF HERE!!"

Women and young ladies are raped, groped, abused. People find rocks in their food. Forced to drink brown water. Separated from family members who they were detained with. Beaten. Choked - to the point of passing out/death .... One Senator trying for oversight at a center cannot force their way into the building, and local law enforcement doesn't have jurisdiction.

It is BECAUSE Republican senators are allowing this with no pushback. It is horrifying. unAmerican. Inhumane. They all need to go. I'm looking for the video I saw from the attorney at the detention center.... https://youtu.be/huL32yJ7WOI?si=eQMABGDxn_vCUF7L

FEMA and TSA. Both essential programs, yes. Both in need of continued funds, yes. The damage done by ICE HAS TO STOP. They cannot be allocated another penny without a complete overhaul. All the domestic terrorists under those masks need to be fired and answer for their crimes. No more arrests without judicial warrants. No more sweeping people up outside of courtrooms for those seeking asylum, thus here legally. CBP needs to be restored to its original functions, and Tom Homan and Greg Bovino need to be fired and replaced with human fucking beings with consciences and moral compasses. Kristi Noem should be impeached. All of these terms should be met before ICE and DHS receive any further funding.

He's doing what he can. Dems cannot simply block legislation, since they are in the minority. They need R senators to vote with them. That's why it's on all of us to keep the pressure on. And support his outreach to his colleagues in the D party, who want to hope that changing the rules will lead to changes in behavior. ICE is already breaking the rules that exist now.

I believe the Democrats only needed one vote in the House and they got it -- Msssey. Unfortunately 7 Democrats defected. Shame. Our representatives are a large part of the problem. Don't they take an oath to uphold the Constitution? And they dump it for a $150k (or so) job? Pathetic.

Nicole Ung's avatar

On this one the Democrats can absolutely block it , because they need 60 votes to pass it.

So we must keep calling and emailing all of them , especially the Republicans, Chuck Schumer and the previous 6 turncoat democrats who voted with the Republicans without getting any major concession in return!

And this bill happens to give ICE an additional 8 B on top of the 80 Billion they got through BBB already.

Guess how much did Biden and Obama spent, while deporting millions of illegals with LEGAL priority orders for deportation ? One tenth of that budget !

They got compliance with phone monitoring, bracelets monitoring, without funneling billions to the private prisons owned by friends and campaign contributors !

Jean McLane's avatar

The DHS funding vote was 220-207, with 7 traitor-Democrats voting Yea. If Jeffries had demanded party solidarity and if these 7 had voted No, the vote count would have been 213-214, and the bill would not have passed.

Jackietastic the Bartender's avatar

This is a critical point in time. We've been convinced by propaganda amplified by the social media explosion that "both sides are the same", "all politicians lie" and so on. It's created apathy in voters and we stopped participating in Democracy. Of those who vote, I suspect there's been a radical drop in other democratic practices like contacting lawmakers, debating with our friends and neighbors, even just paying attention to what's going on in the government.

Now that we realize we need to step back in and really participate, the monster we created by lack of our own oversight is about to eat us. It's exactly like trying to retrain a toddler who has previously been allowed to do exactly as he pleases. It's a lot more work than had he been monitored closely as he grew, correcting mistakes as he made them and teaching him that you're always watching his behavior.

Chris Baldonieri's avatar

But there are a lot of things the Senate could do to throw sand in the gears and they won't. They could walk out and shut it down. Schumer is worthless.

Ann Sharon's avatar

The Dems are in the MINORITY. To conduct business in the Senate requires only that a Majority of Senators be present. The GOP would be more than thrilled to toddle on without pesky Dems present. There is no magic wand that gets us out of this. It’s going to be a long slog. I think the pace is picking up as his poll numbers go down & midterms approach.

We are living proof of what happens when voters give an authoritarian all the levers of power. He controls the House GOP and has ‘joked’ that he is the Speaker. He controls most of the Senate GOP. They all fear his attacks & their constituents.

In both chambers the majority party makes the rules & has a majority on all the committees. (In the Senate it only take a majority to change rules - like to make an exception to the 60 vote requirement.) When a good bi-partisan bill gets out of committee and passes, the president can veto it.

• Which he did to pay back Boebert for voting to release the Epstein files. He vetoed a clean water bill for SE Colorado. She won’t defy him again.

• And he punished the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida with another veto for suing over Alligator Alcatraz.

true but there are delay protocols, venues for legal exercise to use of which some Dems are using.

for those who think Dems can magically stop Republicans bc this is (was) a democracy…they need to look at themselves in the mirror and realize that they failed their civic duty.

yes, hold our representation accountability, but also give them the tools to exercise what needs to be done.

and if needed, replace them with better candidates…but do not assume their lack of success to execute what you want them to do is their failure. in many cases it is our failure bc we are not supporting them the way the need to do the job.

Senator Murphy, I think the time has come for the Senate Democrats to find a new leader, Senator Schumer, while a good man is not up to the challenges of this time. Please find someone else, if not you then someone more of a fighter than Senator Schumer. Time grows short, the midterms are coming, we need forceful courageous leadership now.

David Wemett's avatar

President John F. Kennedy said history will not judge leaders by titles or popularity, but by four questions.

1.) Did they have the courage to stand up to enemies and to their own allies.

2.) Did they show judgment by learning from mistakes and admitting what they did not know.

3.) Did they act with integrity, refusing to let money or ambition pull them away from their principles.

4.) Did they stay dedicated to the public good, loyal to no single person or group, only to the national interest.

I am sorry to have to say that at this time say that Senator Schumer is not following these four essential leadership principals. I think he is failing on 1, 2, 3 and 4.

You would do better to lay blame where it belongs- the Republicans in Congress and the Republican Party - rather than the Democratic Party or DemocratIc Leadership. Even if all Democrats voted against DHS funding and every bill proposed by republics during the rest of this year, they would still not be able to pass any legislation since they have less than 50% of the votes.

The vote on the DHS funding bill was 220-207. Do the math — subtract the 7 rogue Dems from the Yeas and add them to the Nos; resulting in a failure of this bill 213-214!

Donna Kuhl's avatar

Those 7 Democrats need to resign. Immediately.

Dorothy's avatar

Exactly! Keep repeating those facts over and over again! "Its the Republicans, stupid!"

Chris Baldonieri's avatar

But they do have power that they are not using. They could slow everything way down. And not vote to confirm anyone.

Donna Kuhl's avatar

This is defeatist. The Republicans were in the minority and were a le to stop Biden's agenda. Democrats need to find a way to make some Republicans an offer they can't refuse. Or shut the whole thing down. Period. We shouldn't be funding and supporting a government that is killing it's own citizens.

Ann Sharon's avatar

McConnell had Manchin & Sinema who masqueraded as Dems. They were the swing votes needed. They also refused to even consider altering the filibuster to pass things - as does Fetterman - which only takes a simple majority.

The GOP has a majority in each chamber. Therefore it can meet the quorum requirement and conduct business without a single Dem &/or change the rules. The core problem is the GOP controls all the levers of power; has the votes to make the rules; has a majority on all the committees. The president controls them & can use his veto if they do something he doesn’t like. Or as he did not too long ago to punish legislators who vote the wrong way — even private citizens who aggravate him.

I just ask humbly why? Why did the Democrats lose so badly in every case that counted in 2024? That’s my exasperating question. Regarding President, we have a lot of misogynists, I am sure, who would not vote for a woman. I point to the fact that nearly every other Democracy in the world has had a woman leader. Also, many believed our liar-in-chief would do what he said he would, not what many of us knew he would do. A criminal who saved himself from prison because he won the swing states that should have had at least a few making a blue wall. They all fell.

Mary's avatar

Senator Murphy, the overwhelming majority of us agree with you, and are morally opposed to further funding for this group of thugs known as CBP or ICE.

What we don't understand is why isn't the party leadership whipping the vote against this funding? And if leadership isn't willing to do it, someone needs to step up and fill the void. It is unconscionable that seven democratic House members voted for the DHS appropriations bill. It might not have passed without those votes.

Call them out. By name. These people are traitors to the country just like the Republicans are. If you want to be one of the good lawmakers, you have to relentlessly callout the failures within your own party.

The seven traitors to the American People:

- Henry Cuellar (Texas 28th District)

- Jared Golden (Maine 2nd District)

- Marie Perez (Washington St 3rd District)

- Laura Gillen (NY 4th District)

- Don Davis (NC 1st District)

DHS funding passed through Congress because 7 Democrats voted with Republicans to allow Trump's personal gestapo to continue to kidnap, terrorize, and murder unchecked. Every time there is an opportunity to put up a fight, somehow there are just enough Democratic defections to rubber stamp everything the Trump regime wants to do. It does not feel as if we have an opposition party. Much of the outrage of your colleagues seems performative. I believe you truly care and are one of the better representatives we have. I know you and some other Senators have formed a "fight club." So Fight! A Democratic tea party is long over due. Schumer is weak, corrupt and complicit. So is Jefferies. They need to be removed. If we get to vote and our votes count. Trump is going to try and stop the elections, because he fears repubs will lose.

Annie Girard's avatar

I'm Canadian. From our side of the border, we see the US turning into an authoritarian regime each day more.

Trump is overtaking every levers of government and power to his advantage, until the US will be under his full control with no possible opposition. This transformation is happening extremely fast, much faster than in any other historic examples.

You are part of the forces that can stand to stop this. An acknowledgement needs to be made that the democratic process is under a very direct threat, destined to turn the US senate into a simple rubber stamping institution for his will.

No other aspiring dictator in history has been given total immunity by the Supreme Court of the country.

The US democratic system of governance is under direct threat; it is being destroyed each day more.

The next election process is being hampered each day more by decisions that will stop large parts of the electorate that could be against Trump and his takeover from voting, starting with visible minorities and women.

Unless the senators who oppose this upcoming regime decide to fight by every means available to them, they will be held responsible for the length of history for everything that will happen because of their complacency.

I am absolutely certain that you all have the full support of your constituents and of all the citizens of every country in the world to stand with all the means available to you, and all your might, to oppose this, to stop it from happening.

You certainly have the support of all Canadians, except the minority who stand for only their own individual interests. For the vast majority of us who stand for democracy and human rights, we will fight together in solidarity against what is coming, as hard as Ukrainians are doing it against Putin. Seeing that this is one of the leaders, maybe not the worst, on whom Trump is modelling his project on.
