Thanks for paying attention to Venezuela, Trump recently entered into some sort of magical deal where the US gets "for free" 20% of Venezuela's oil for the next century (no one believes any of this). Who's going to pay for the oil system infrastructure and repairs to stabilize the existing power grid to power the pumps? Who's going to repair and maintain the transport pipelines? Just to get the Orinoco fields to be viable the projections are are at a minimum around $60 billion, and none of the major players in the oil business wants to deal with Venezuela and it's corrupt oil company PDVSA because the "majors" have had their assets "nationalized" (appropriated by the Chavez regime) twice in recent memory. Venezuelan crude is very thick barely above bitumen in consistency. Pumping of Venezuela crude requires the purchase of imported diluents like naphtha, so the cost of export is extreme.
I think what I should have said is the "Venezuela Oil Deal" is a complete fabrication. The promised oil may/may not be there (you never know about a resource until someone's already extracting it) certainly not going to get extracted anytime soon (so some number of years in the future/maybe never), the oil's going to be expensive because to extract it would require mixing it with imported naptha, in a best case scenario. Nobody's stepping forward to provide the necessary infrastructure/pipelines etc, because they're concerned that the Venezuela government will just "nationalize" it. So, ultimately the US grabbed Nicolás Maduro and accomplished exactly nothing. To prosecute these criminals and hold them accountable it would be helpful to be able to follow the money. But that's not so easy, because these criminals, like many others, use crypto to hide their crimes. The failure to legitimize crypto with the Clarity ACT is good news, but we need to somehow regulate crypto out of existence. Crypto has two uses. It is a less-than-zero-sum speculation (Ponzi) scheme that has transferred lots of money from working class victims to those who charge transaction fees and those in power who can manipulate the market. The other use is to facilitate criminal activity. The is obviously why the current president likes it so much.
